DOT physicals are physical exams that help drivers qualify to operate commercial vehicles. The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration requires these exams to assess a driver’s physical, mental, and emotional health, focusing on the things that affect your ability to operate a commercial vehicle safely.
DOT physicals include:
You need to have 20/40 or better vision in both eyes to meet the vision requirement for DOT exams. You must also have color vision that allows you to see traffic signals.
Finally, you must have at least 70 degrees of a full field of vision in both eyes to pass the exam. You can wear your glasses or contact lenses for the vision check.
You need to be able to hear a forced whisper from a minimum of five feet away. This requirement doesn’t apply to both ears, so as long as you can hear it in one ear (your “good” ear), you can pass. You’re allowed to wear your hearing aid for this test.
Blood pressure of less than 140/90 mmHg qualifies to pass this portion of the physical. If your blood pressure is higher than that, however, you can still qualify for a medical certification, but it will be valid for a shorter period of time than if your blood pressure meets the lower threshold.
The urine test is performed by the on-site lab at EZMED Primary & Urgent Care. This test checks for high glucose and protein levels and also looks for blood in your urine. Additionally, the urine test may check for drugs.
Medical history includes discussing all of your past illnesses, injuries, surgeries, and health problems. It covers physical, mental, and emotional health.
The physical exam is an overall assessment of your physical fitness to determine whether you’re physically able to operate a commercial vehicle safely.
In general, results of a DOT physical are valid for two years. But if you have a health issue like high blood pressure, your results may be valid for 3-12 months. This shorter period gives you the chance to work on your health and correct issues.
